10.2 Talk about when you feel tired.

I feel pretty tired these days, because I have a lot on my plate.

I'm working on a large project at my office.

We have a big dead line coming up.
                            다가오고 있다 (*up: 접근의 의미)

I work over time a lot and come home very late.
(=Work after hours: 시간 외 근무)

I sometimes have to bring work home and even work over the weekend.

I'm getting only three or four hours of sleep a night.
                               하루 3~4시간 자고 있다

I feel like I'm overworking at times but there's not much I can do.

I'm trying my best not to get burned out.

I just hope this project passes by as soon as possible.

I think I will take a few days off after work done with it.

10.1 Talk about English classes you took back in school.

One of my favorite subjects back in school was English.
                                    학창시절 (back in my twenties : 내가 20대때)

I really liked my English classes and teachers.


I think we had four to five classes a week.
                    네 다섯개

English was mandatory subject and it was one of the subjects in Korean SAT.

We learned grammar and we were tested on reading and listening skills during our mid-terms and finals.
(*be tested on: ~에 관해 평가를 받다)

In college we also had to brush up on our speaking skills.

Companies these days require speaking test scores.

That's why many people are taking speaking tests such as OPIC.

Mean while, students these days start learning English as a subject from third grade.

There are many online courses or phone based programs that offer various programs.


9. 30 Talk about the car insurance you have

It is required by law to have car insurance in Korea.

법으로 규정돼 있다 (mandatory)/ insurance는 복수를 안쓴다
(*get insurance : 보험에 가입하다, have insurance: 보험에 가입돼 있는 상태)

I have comprehensive collusion coverage on my insurance plan.

The insurance company pays if my car was in an accident and needs for repairs
                                 (*I was in an car accident: 사고가 났다)      (반드시 복수로!!)

I also have full liability coverage.

It covers both injury and property damage.

Most car insurance policies in Korea are like that.

I have to renew my car insurance every year.

The insurance fee varies  from person to person.

It depends on how old you are and how long you had car insurance.

Plus the fee goes up if you had accidents and goes down if you didn't have any accidents.

9. 29 Talk about Convenience Stores in Korea

You can find convenience stores all over the place in Korea.

You can easily find one, because they are on every street corner.

Most of them are  open 24 hours a day.
                    24시간 내내 영업을 한다
They sell everything at convenience store.

It's not just drinks, snacks or ice cream.

They also sell basic stationery and household items.

They even sell things like plain cards and sewing kits.

Pus a lot of convenience store have promotions going on.

You can get discounts with points on your mobile membership card.

They also had 'buy two get one free' promotions going on for various items.

This helps boost sales for the store and helps customer get more for their money

9. 25 Talk about the family holidays in Korea

There are two big family holidays in Korea.

One of them is that Korean version of thanks giving called 추석.
                              한국판
(호떡 is Korean version of Pan cake: 호떡은 한국판 팬케이크다.)

It's a 3 days holiday, normally during month of  September or October.

The reason the day changes is that it is based on lunar calendar.

During the family holidays, family members get together at one place.

People visit their hometowns to see their relatives
                          고향
They cook holiday foods and eat together.
             
They also hold memorials for their ancestors.  ('제사를 지내다' 가장 간단한 표현)
              열다    제사 (or memorial service)
(it's very meaningful to hold memorial for ancestor.)

They also visit ancestor's graves to pay their respects.

As everybody is on the move,

It's very hard to get plane or train tickets during this time of year.

*Traffic was an nightmare. : 차가 끔찍하게 막혔어.
I was stuck in traffic forever : 정말 오랫동안 묶여 있었어.


9. 24 Talk about the housing market in Korea

The housing market in Korea has been in a slump for the past few years.
(I'm in a slump :나는 침체기다)

There were less and less people who wanted to buy houses as the economy was bad
     (gradually decline <-> more and more)

More people wanted to rent a house or a apartment instead.

As more people opted to sign a lease contract, rent prices rose sharply.
(opt to: ~ 하기로 선택하다,
sigh a lease contract: 임대계약
rise sharply: 급격히 상승하다)

That became a huge burden on households. (가정, 가계)
                       큰 부담 (it's a huge burden on me: 그게 얼마나 부담인지 아니?)

Meanwhile there are two ways of leasing a home in Korea.
                                                   
One is 월세 which is monthly rent system, the other is 전세.

This is when you pay a lump-sum the deposit at the  beginning of the lease contract and don't pay a monthly rent.          
(a lump-sum :  일시불 =huge amount of money)
(this is when : 이런 경우는~다, 라고 말할때)

*There are signs of recovery recently. 최근 회복하려는 조짐이 있다.



9. 23 Talk about A studio apartment you used to live in

I used to live in a studio when I was in college.
                                              대학을 주로 college라 함.
Because My family lived far from my school, I had to move out,
                                                                     이사가다 (move in 이사오다)
and lived by myself. (혼자 살았다)

Many of my classmates lived in similar studio like that.
                 학교친구
The studio I used to live in was just right size for me
                                           내게 딱 맞는 크기다.
It wasn't that big, but it had everything I needed, including a bath room with the shower booth.

In fact it was partly furnished studio.
                      (non-furnished, fully furnished)    

things like the washer and the fridge were built into the walls.
                 세탁기            냉장고  (에어컨 : the AC)
I have to buy  my own bed and desk among other things.

I paid a monthly rent while I was living there

9. 22 Talk about your contacts or glasses.

I have pretty bad eye sight 
       <-> good eye sight
My eye sight was pretty bad from when I was young.

(I've had bad eye sight since when I was young. )

It got worse in my teenage years.

I needed to get a higher prescription for my contact as my vision worsened.

Now I can't see at all without my contacts.

I used to disposable contacts lenses that are very convenient.

When i com home I take out contacts and wear glasses.

I need to give my eyes some rest.

A lot of people around have gotten vision enhancement surgery.

I'm thinking of getting LASIK or implantable contact lenses myself in the future.

I can't wait to get 20 20 vision

9. 21. Do you think you are athletic?
                          (운동을 잘하는, 운동신경이 뛰어난)

Both my parents are very athletic.

My dad was on a soccer team when he was in school.
(on a team : 팀 소속을 나타낼 때)

My mom used to swim competitively in high school.
                     수영선수 생활을 했었다
(competitively = compete with other : 다른 사람과 경쟁하다)

They now enjoy playing badminton and golf time to time

I'm quite athletic myself. ('나도', 라는 어감. 강조)
운동신경이 없는 편이 아니다. ('꽤' 좋은 편이다)

I think I got it from my parents.
         부모님에게 물려받았다. (외모, 성격, 기질 등등)

I'm a fast learner when it comes to sports.

I've tried various types of sports in my life including squash, tennis, and bowling.

I'm taking yoga classes these days as well.
요가 수업을 듣는다, 배운다

Yoga helps me become more flexible.

Overall, I'm glad I'm a person who enjoy sports.

I think I can stay healthier. because I'm like this.

9. 19 Talk about Math skill.

I wasn't that good at Math when I was in school.
   <-> pretty good at            학창시절

Math was not definitely my favorite subject.

However when it comes to doing the Math in daily life, I'm not that bad.
(do the math : 1. 계산하다 , 2. 상황을 계산하다/따져보다/생각해보다, 뭔가 여러가지를 비교하고 따져보다는 의미도 있음. )
 (It's not that difficult to do the math. : 뭘 그렇게 따져. 어려운게 아닌데)

People around me often tell me I'm pretty good with numbers.

I can add up or multiply things pretty easily.

I have a calculator on my phone, I'm used to doing the Math in my head.

I like to do the math in my head. 암산하는 걸 좋아하다

I think many Koreans like this, because we are trained to do basic Math in our heads as children.                                                                기본적인 계산

I think it's quite a useful skill.

9.17 Talk about how good your memory is

I think I have fairy good memory.
                제법, 꽤
I remember things that happened in the past quite well.

I'm pretty good at remembering numbers as well.

I remember phone number or numbers on addresses quite well.

I'm not that good with names though.
 (I'm not that good with children. : 난 아이들을 잘 다루지 못해)

I forget people's names quite easily.

Plus I tend to forget where I put my things quite often.

I leave behind my keys or cell phone off and on.

That's why I always try to pay more attention.

Next I always try to write down things that what I have to do on my scheduler.

By making to-do list like this, I can become less forgetful

9.16 Talk about the lightly heard of a water shortage

It Seems like we have enough water around us.

But there is high possibility that we made face a water shortage in the near future.                                                     직면하다                                 가까운 장래에

People think that the earth has endless amount of water, but that's not true

he seems to have endless amount of energy. 그는 에너지가 무한한 거 같아)

70% of the earth is water, but 97% of that is sea water.

Less than 3% is fresh water we can use.

Some countries are already running out of fresh water supplies.

(We are running out of option; 선택권이 점점 없어지고 있다)

Rivers and lakes are drying up.

Plus We see severe droughts more often.

We need to conserve water as much as we can.

Also We need to come up with ways to recycle the water that we use.
                   (방법을) 마련하다, 생각해내다= bring up, think of

*Don't keep the water running : 물 틀어놓지 마라.
 (=don't let the water running)
Hey the water is running : 이봐, 물이 흐르고 있잖아. (안 잠그고 뭐하는거야?)
We do have to conserve water.



9. 15 Talk about Baby Products

Babies need a lot of things.

They need diapers first of all.

It takes them sometimes to get potty trained.
                                  (파리) 배변훈련
You also need crib for the baby to sleep in.
                  (크립) 유아용침대
Plus you need stroller as well.
                    유모차 (=baby carriage, 구식표현)
The price of stroller's vary based on brand.

Next you also need milk bottles and pacifiers.

Plus you need baby clothes.

You need clothes for baby to wear indoors and outdoors.
                                                    실내, 실외
(I stayed indoor all days long, because I wasn't feel well.)

And then you need to buy toys for baby.

Toys are very important because they help the baby think.

Raising baby can be a financial burden.

That's why friends and family members help out by buying gifts for the baby.

9. 14 Talk about a time when you got Car sick

I used to get car sick very easily when I was kid.
(sea sick: 배멀미 , air sick:비행기 멀미)

My mom used to put behind the ear patches on me when we went on the car trip.

As I grown up, I don't get carsick that easily.

However I remember it time I got carsick when I was going on a trip few years ago.

We were stuck in some traffic.
    can not move, 막혀있다. 움직일 수 없다 (어쩔수 없는 상황)

My friend and I were messaging each other back and forth on our cellphones.
문자보내다: 예전엔 text라고 썼는데 요즘엔 message라는 동사를 더 많이 씀
back and forth: 왔다갔다가 주고받다

After a while I started to felt a bit dizzy and my stomach felt uneasy
                                            (=my stomach is upset 속이 불편하다)
(I feel queasy : 속이 울렁거리고 불편하다. 이거 하나만 써도됨.)

I felt like throwing up.
토할것 같았다.

It was quite unpleasant feeling.

I felt a bit better after I roll down the windows and got some fresh air.
                                창문을 열다/내리다 <->roll up

*My dog throw up in the car. 개가 차에서 토했어.
How it that happened? 어떻게 그런 일이 일어났지?
He is still a puppy.: 아직 아기잖아. 어리잖아.

9. 11 How often do you have meat?

I'm definitely a meat person
나는 고기 정말 좋아합니다.
(My brother is huge meat person :내 동생은 고기대장이다)

I go to Korean barbecue restaurants quite often to have dinner.

However, I also like to have meat at home.

I grill meat on the frying pan or put meat in soups or stews I cook.

There's a butcher shop I go to near my house.
           (붓쳐) 정육점
I buy pork and beef there most of the time.

They have quality meat and a price is cheaper than other place.
             질좋은 (they serve quality coffee)

The owner is very friendly and I'm a regular there.
(I used to be a regular there: 예전에 거기 단골이었다)
(친절하다는 friendly를 씀. kind는 심성이 착하다는 뜻.
불친절하다는 unfriendly or impolite)

When I'm in the mood for chicken or duck, I go to the local supermarket.
~가 당긴다. ~ 하고싶다 (~wine, coffee, Ice cream 등등)    동네슈퍼
(local: 동네./ local pharmacy: 동네 약국, I know my locals. :나는 동네주민들을 알아)

I buy chicken breast and use them when I make salads.

I think grill it more. put it back on the grill: 더 익혀야겠어. 다시 그릴에 올려놔.
The meat is tough. It's over cooked. : 고기가 너무 질겨. 너무 익혔어.

9.9 Talk about overseas locations Korean often visit for vacation

More than 16 million Koreans went overseas in 2014 alone.

This is a  record high number which is expected to be broken again this year.

Korean go overseas for vacation or business.

It has become a common thing for families to spend their vacations overseas.
(happen very often, 흔한 일)

The countries that Korean visit the most are China, Japan and Tailand.

The cities that Korean visit the most are Hongkong, Tokyo and Bangkok.

Many honey mooner spend their honey moon at places such as Bali, Phuket or Hawaii.

I haven't done that much travelling myself yet.
(do travel : 여행하다)

I'd like to visit Europe if I have the chance.
(I'd like to travel around the world if I have the opportunity/
I'd like to meet in person if I have the chance.)

I had a blast = I had great time, enjoyed very much. = I had awsome : 끝내줬어!
It was a bit too short. ; 살짝 좀 짧았어.


9.6 Talk about  the Tourism industry

The tourist industry is booming

More than 1 billion people travel over seas every year.

Tourism brings in a lot of money.

Tourist spend money on plane tickets, hotels and shopping

This create a lot of jobs.

Many new jobs are created in tourism related to field.

Some countries make a lot of money through tourism.

For instance, France gets the highest number of tourists world wide.

Close to 80 million visit France every single year.

Plus many vacationers visit other countries for their vacations.

The revenue made from tourism is beyond our expectation.
