8.1 Talk about when you are prepping for the college Entrance Exam
대학입시를 준비한 경험을 말해봅시다.
When I was a senior high school, everyone was obsessed with getting into a college.
고 3일 때,
- be obsessed with : ~빠지다. 사라잡히다. 집착하다
I had to keep my grade point average GPA high throughout high school.
I also had to do a lot of test prep for the Korean SAT.
수능준비를 많이 해야했습니다.
- do test prep : 시험준비를 하다
I gave my all to get ready. I paid attention in class.
최선을 다해 준비했고, 수업시간에도 집중했습니다.
- give one's all : 최선을 다하다 (= do one's best)
- pay attention: 주의를 집중하다.
I also went to cram schools after classes and got private tutoring.
- cram school : 사설학원 (과외 : private tutoring)
방과후 학원도 다녔고, 과외도 받았습니다.
I was part of the first generational of Internet lecture students.
저는 인터넷강의 1세대입니다.
I looked into all the available information to choose a school. However I didn't make it.
갈 수 있는 학교에 관한 모든 정보를 살펴봤지만, 성공하지 못했습니다.
- make it : 성공하다
When I fail to get accepted, it really took the wind out of my sails.
불합격했을 때, 힘이 많이 빠졌습니다.
- take the wind out of my sails 힘이 빠지다, 자신감이 없어지다
But soon I redoubled my efforts, I spent another year for preparing college.
나는 더 박차를 가하고 대학에 가기위해 1년을 보냈습니다.
- redouble one's efforts: 노력을 배가하다, 다시 박차를 가하다
And a year later I got into the school of my choice.
1년 뒤 내가 원하는 학교에 갈 수 있었습니다.
<Expression of the day>
A: You will be a high school senior in few month. 곧 고 3이 되겠구나.
B: I know, I'm really dragging it. 알아요. 두렵습니다.
A: Don't worry, it will be over before you know it. 걱정하지마. 곧 끝날테니까.
