3.18 Talk about how Koreans love to sing.
      한국인이 얼마나 노래를 좋아하는지 이야기해봅시다.

Koreans are fond of singing when they gather with their friends.
한국인들은 친구들과 만나면 노래부르는 걸 좋아합니다.
  -be fond of : ~ 좋아하다 (like < be fond of < Love  순으로)

Whereas house parties are popular in some countries, people in Korea tend to meet away from home.
하우스파티가 인기인 나라들이 있는 반면, 한국에선 집 밖에서 만나는 걸 선호합니다.
  -tend to do ~: ~하는 경향이 있다
  (ex: She tends to speak little too loudly. 그녀는 좀 크게 말하는 경향이 있다
       He tends to be late to meetings. 그 친구는 회의에 늦는 경향이 있다)

They like to go to what's called a 노래방 to sing together.
함께 노래하기 위해 노래방이라고 하는 곳에 가는 걸 좋아합니다.
  -what's called : 소위 ~라고 하는

A 노래방(noraebang) is a singing venue where private rooms are available for rent.
노래방은 독립된 방을 대여해서 노래할 수 있는 장소입니다.

People often go there after drinking at social get-togethers or office dinners.
사람들은 회식이나 모임에서 술을 좀 먹고 노래방에 갑니다.
  -get-together: 모임 (get together은 '만나다'는 구동사도 됨. =meet up)

Singing to your heart's content is a great way to use energy.
마음껏 노래하는 건 에너지를 쓰는 좋은 방법입니다.
  -to one's heart's content: 마음껏, 흡족히 (=as much or as often as you like)
  (ex: On weekends I sleep to my heart's content. 주말이면 마음껏 잔다.
       He opened the bottle and drank to his heart's content. 그는 병을 열어서 마시고 싶은대로 마셨다)

It's not uncommon for even people who are usually shy to really get into a song.
평소엔 수줍은 사람들이 노래에 심취해 부르는게 흔한 일입니다.
 - It's not uncommon: 흔한일이다 (이중부정으로 강조)
  (ex: Insomnia is not uncommon among adults. 성인들에게 불면증은 흔한 일이다)
   - get into ~:~에 심취해서
  (ex: He really got into the song he was singing. 그는 자기 노래에 정말 심취해 부른다.
       She's really getting into the new book. 그녀는 새 책에 푹 빠져 있다)

Most Korean people have a pet song that they love to sing.
대부분 한국인들은  즐겨 부르는 애창곡이 있습니다.
  -pet song: 가장 좋아하는 노래, 애창곡 (pet peeve : 가장 싫어하는 것)
  (ex: English is my pet subject. 영어는 내가 가장 좋아하는 과목이다)

Once again, Singing is a universal pastime in Korea.
다시 말하지만, 노래는 한국에서 보편적인 취미생활입니다.
  -pastime : 취미

B: I did, what a great voice he has. 어. 목소리 완전 좋더라.
A: I never knew that he was such a talented singer. 노래부르는 재능이 있는지 몰랐어.
B: He has got a great set of pipes. 그는 목청이 정말 좋더라.


3.17 Talk about the ATMs in Korea

ATMs are convenient, time saving devices that don't receive their due in recognition.
ATM은 편리하고 시간을 절약해주지만 그렇게 인정받진 못합니다.
  -receive one's due : 마땅히 ~을 받다
  (ex: Hard work always receive its due. 열심히 하면 언제나 인정받는다)

Not too long ago, customers had no choice but to visit the bank in person to do any banking.
얼마전만 해도 고객들은 은행업무를 하려면 은행에 직접 방문할 수 밖에 없었습니다.
  -have no choice (but to): 선택의 여지가 없다
  (ex: With time running out quickly, I really had no choice. 시간이 너무 빨리 지나가서 선택의 여지가 없었습니다. )
  -in person : 직접
  (ex: It's wonderful to finally meet you in person. 마침내 직접 만나서 영광입니다)

This problem was made worse  by banks closing too early.
이런 문제는 은행이 문을 너무 일찍 닫아서 더 나빠졌죠.

This problem is a thing of the past now since we can conveniently use an ATM to make a withdrawal or deposit.
이런 일은 과거일이 됐고, 지금은 ATM을 이용해서 편리하게 입출금을 할 수 있습니다.
  -thing of the past : 과거 일이 되다

In Korea, there's almost always an ATM a stone's throw away.
한국에선 지척에 ATM이 하나씩 있다.
  -a stone's throw away: 지척간에, 매우 가까운 거리,

The additional fees can be a pain in the neck but all things considered, the pros outweigh the cons .
수수료가 골칫거리긴 하지만 모든 걸 고려해봤을 때, 실보다 득이 많습니다.
  -pain in the neck : 골칫거리, 문제인물
  -all things considered: 모든 걸 고려해볼 때
  (ex: All things considered we decided Bali would be the best vacation spot. 모든 걸 고려해봤을 때 발리가 최고의 휴가지라고 결정했다)
  -the pros outweigh the cons : 실보다 득이 많다

An more than one occasion I was left hanging with no cash, but I was saved by an ATM.
현금이 없어서 곤란해질 때마다 ATM덕분에 살았습니다.
  -An more than one occasion : 1번 이상
  (ex: she had spilled food on her shirts an more than one occasion. 그녀는 셔츠에 한번 이상 음식을 흘렸다)

A: Do you have any cash to pay the highway toll? 고속도로 통행료 낼 현금 있니?
B: No, I spent all earlier. 아니, 일찌감치 다 썼는데.
A: Don't worry. We can make a quick pit stop to visit an ATM. 걱정마. 잠깐 멈춰서 ATM 들리면 돼.
B: Good idea. 좋은 생각이야.




3.16 Talk about a medical check-up you got in the past

     과거에 건강검진 받았던 이야기해봅시다

One of my friends once told me that I had a bad breath.
친구 중 하난가 내게 입냄새가 난다고 한 적이 있습니다.
  -  have a bad breath : 입냄새가 나다

I was mortified.
정말 창피했죠.
   -mortified : 정말 수치스럽다, 창피하다 (embarrassed 보다 강한 표현)
  (ex: I was mortified to tell my parents that I had failed the test again. 시험에 또 떨어졌다고 부모님께 말하는 게 정말 창피했다)

But rather than trying to get on my nerves, he was telling me that it could be a symptom of poor health.
 그런데 저를 기분나쁘게 하려기보다, 내가 건강이 안좋다는 징후인거 같다고 말했어요.
  - get on one's nerves : 신경을 거슬리다, 심기를 건드리다
  (ex: The noise began to get on my nerves. 그 소리에 심기가 불편하기 시작했다.)

I followed his advice and got a medical check-up.
그의 조언을 따라, 건강검진을 받았습니다.

It was with a heavy heart that I made a visit to the hospital.
병원에 가는 건 마음이 무거웠습니다.
  -with a heavy heart: 슬프다, 마음이 무겁다, 우울하다

However I was taken aback to find that the tests weren't so taxing.
그런데 검사가 그렇게 힘들지 않아서 의외였습니다.  
   -be taken aback: 깜짝 놀라다, 의외다 (=surprise, confuse)
   -taxing: 힘들다, 힘겹다
  (ex: It's a taxing trail but it was worth to make it to the end. 힘든 등산로였지만, 끝까지 갈만한 가치가 있었다)

The hospital staff were friendly and made me feel at home.
병원 직원들이 친절해서 집처럼 편안했습니다.

More importantly, I swell with the knowledge that I was investing in my health.
보다 중요한 건 내가 건강한 것에 투자하는것에 가슴이 벅찼습니다.
  -swell with the knowledge~ : 지식이 증가하다, ~를 알아서 기쁘다

The biggest huddle was the endoscopy, but everything else was a breeze. 
가장 어려웠던건 내시경 검사였습니다. 그외 모든건 식은 죽먹기였죠
  - endoscopy(인더스코피): 내시경검사
  - breeze: 식은 죽 먹기
  (ex: With no traffic all on the roads, the drive was a breeze. 길에 차가 없어서 운전해 오는 게 식은 죽먹기였다
        I thought that the class would be hard, but it was a breeze. 수업이 어려울거라고 생각했는데 식은 죽먹기였습니다. )

B: She's at home, in bed. 집에, 침대에 있어.
A: Oh, no. Is She still feeling under the weather? 오, 아직도 컨디션이 안 좋은거야?
B: Yeah, She should really go get a medical check-up. 응. 그녀는 정말로 건강검진을 받으러 가야 해.



3.15 Talk about smart phone games people play these days 
      요즘 사람들이 즐기는 스마트폰 게임에 대해 이야기해봅시다

Whenever I hop on the subway these days, it seems like everyone has  their nose buried in a smart phone screen.
요즘 지하철에 탈 때마다, 모두가 스마트폰을 보고 있는 거 같습니다.
  - hop on : 타다
  (ex: I drop you off, why don't you hop on?내가 가는 길에 내려줄테니까 타는게 어때?
       I hop on the subway right away. 빨리 지하철에 탔다
       After waiting in a cold, I was glad to hop on the bus. 추위속에 기다리다가 버스에 타니 좋았다.)
  - have one's nose bury : 코를 박고 하다, 열중하다 (=bury one's nose)
    (ex: The game was so addictive that I always had my nose buried in it. 그 게임이 너무 재밌어서 언제나 하게 된다)
         She always has her nose buried in a book. 그녀는 언제나 책을 읽고 있다

Many of them are playing games.
게임하는 사람이 많습니다.

There are tones of genre so there really is something for everyone.
장르가 워낙 다양해서 누구나 취향에 따라 할 수 있는게 있습니다.
  -genre(좡라) : 장르
  -There is something for everyone ~ : 누구나 다 다르다
   (ex: The beach has lots of things to do so there's something for every one. 해변에서는 할게 많아서 누구나 취향에 따라 할 수 있는 게 있다)

We all have our favorites and I'm no exception.
모두 좋아하는게 있고, 저도 예외는 아닙니다.

I have a soft spot for puzzle games.
저는 퍼즐게임을 무척 좋아합니다.
  -have a soft spot for ~: ~에 약하다. ~을 무척 좋아하다

  (ex: I don't like sweet foods but I have a soft spot for ice cream. 단것을 좋아하지 않지만 아이스크림만큼은 좋아한다.

      Even athletes have a soft spot for unhealthy food. 심지어 운동선수들도 건강에 좋지 않은 음식을 좋아한다)

Still, I understand why smart phone games are raising eye brows.
스마트폰 게임이 왜 눈살을 찌푸리게 하는지 압니다.

For one thing, there are obstacles to conversations between people.
한 예로 든다면, 사람들과 대화하는데 방해가 됩니다.

Also the small screens and bad posture are certainly not what the doctor ordered.
또 작은 스크린과 나쁜 자세는 절대 권장되는게 아니죠.

Nonetheless  in moderation, smart phone games can be a healthy pastime.
그렇긴 해도 적당히만 하면 스마트폰 게임은 건강한 취미가 될 수 있습니다.
  -Nonetheless: 그렇더라도, 그렇기는 하지만
  - in moderation 적당히만 하면
  (ex: I don't think it's bad to drink as long as in moderation. 적당히만 마시면 술이 나쁘다고 생각하지 않다.
      You should always do things in moderation. 언제나 적당히 하는게 좋다. 과유불급)
  - pastime: 취미 (=hobby)

A: Is that a new game on your phone?  네 폰에 그거 새 게임이야?
B: Yes, It's my new favorite, Would you like to try? 응. 내가 요새 제일 좋아하는거. 한번 해볼래?
A: I would love to. Are you sure it's ok? 좋지. 괜찮겠어?
B: Of course. Have a blast. (=have fun) 당연하지. 재밌게 해.


3.14 Talk about the Korea bullet train, the KTX
       초고속 열차 KTX에 대해 이야기해봅시다

Korea has a bullet train called the KTX.
한국은 KTX라고 하는 초고속 열차가 있습니다.
  - bullet train : 초고속 열차

Sometimes I feel nostalgic for the slower, noisier trains of the past.
가끔은 옛날의 시끄럽고 느린 열차가 그립습니다.
   - feel nostalgic for~ : ~에 향수를 느끼다, 그리워하다 (=miss)

But the convenience of the KTX is too good to pass on.
하지만 지나치기엔 KTX의 편리함이 너무 좋습니다.
  -too good to past on : 놓치치기엔 아깝다.

The speed is so high that it's mind-boggling.
속도가 얼마나 빠른지, 믿기 어려울 정도입니다.
  -mind-boggling (=mind-blowing) 엄청 놀라운, 믿기 어려운
 (ex:  His annual income is so high that it's mind-boggling. 그의 연간 소득이 너무 높아서 깜짝 놀랐다)

You usually arrive at your destination in the blink of an eye. 
눈 깜짝할 새에 목적지에 도착해있습니다.
  - in the blink of an eye. : 눈깜짝할새에
  (ex: He got it done in the blink of an eye. 그가 일을 눈 깜짝할 새에 다 했다.)

I also love seeing the different people on the trains.
저는 기차에서 다른 사람들 보는 걸 아주 좋아합니다.

The business men are poring over documents or eating lunch on the go.
사업가들은 서류를 자세히 읽거나 이동하면서 점심을 먹습니다.
   - pore over(포어 오버): 자세히 살펴보다, 읽다. 조사하다 (=pore through)
  (ex: She sip her coffee as she pore over the newspaper. 그녀는 신문을 자세히 읽으며 커피를 홀짝홀짝 마시고 있다.
       I need to pore over these documents before I sign them. 서명하기 전에 이 서류들을 자세히 읽어봐야한다)
  - on the go : 이동 중에 (=on the move)

Grandparents are dotting on their grandchildren.
조부모들은 손주들을 아주 귀여워합니다.
  -dote on : 맹목적으로 사랑하다, 애지중지하다

Young couple are whispering sweet nothings into each other's ears.
젊은 커플들을 밀어를 속삭입니다.
  -whisper sweet nothings into someone's ears : 밀어를 속삭이다

Overall, I really enjoy taking the KTX.
전반적으로 KTX 타는 걸 좋아합니다.

A: Did you book the tickets for our trip next week? 다음주 우리 여행 표 샀니?
   -book: 예약하다, 사다
B: No,  I decided not to. 아니 안그러기로 했어.
A: Why? How are we going to get there? 왜? 그럼 우리 어떻게 거기 가?
B: I'll rent the car, so we can drive there instead. 차를 빌릴거야. 대신 차 몰고 가는거지.
