3.8 Talk about some Korean table manners.
한국의 식사예절을 이야기해봅시다.
Some table manners are unique to the Korea culture.
한국엔 고유한 식사 예절이 있습니다.
-unique to: 고유한, 특수한
(ex: Finger prints are unique to each person. 지문은 사람마다 고유합니다.
What kind of food is unique to this region? 이 지역 특산물이 뭡니까?)
For one, there is proper way to hold chopsticks.
하나가 젓가락을 제대로 쥐는 방법입니다.
When you hold them up, they should be parallel to each other.
젓가락을 쥐었을 때, 서로 평행이 되게 해야 합니다.
-parallel(패럴렐) : 평행
(ex: Two lines are parallel to each other: 두 선이 평행을 이루고 있다.)
In Korea making loud noises while you eat is considered rude.
한국에선 식사중 큰 소리를 내는 걸 무례하게 여깁니다.
Slurping is frown upon.
후루룩거리는 건 눈살을 찌푸리게 합니다.
- slurp : 후루룩 거리다 /smacking : 쩝쩝 거리다
(ex: Slurping is the best way to eat instant noodle 라면먹을 땐 후루룩 거리는게 좋다
Please try not to slurp while you eat. 먹을 땐 소리내지 않도록 하세요.)
- be frown upon : ~에 눈살을 찌푸리다, 못마땅하다.
(ex: Being late is frown upon. 늦는 건 눈살을 찌푸리게 합니다.
Littering is frown upon. 쓰레기 버리는 건 눈살을 찌푸리게 합니다.
Writing someone's name in red ink frown upon. 이름을 빨간색으로 쓰는건 좋아하지 않습니다)
Picking at your food is also discouraged.
음식을 깨작거리는 것도 피해야 합니다.
-Pick at your food : 깨작깨작거리다, 건드리고 먹지 않다
(ex: You shouldn't pick at your food: 음식을 깨작거리면 안됩니다.
Why are you just picking at your food? 왜 음식을 건드리고 먹질 않니?)
But more importantly, respecting the elderly extends to the dinner table.
더 중요한 건 연장자에게 밥상에서 예의를 표해야합니다.
-respecting the elderly : 어른을 공경하다
(ex: We are taught to respect the elderly from a young age. 어릴때부터 어른을 공경하라고 배운다
Koreans are accustomed to respecting the elderly. 어른을 공경하는게 몸에 배여있다)
If you are seated at a table with people who are older than you wait quietly for them to start eating first.
연장자와 함께 식탁에 앉으면, 그들이 먼저 드실때까지 조용히 기다립니다.
Food placement is important too.
음식 놓는 위치도 중요합니다.
The rice ball is placed on the left and the soup ball on the right
밥그릇은 왼쪽에 국그릇은 오른쪽에 놓습니다.

A: How do you excuse yourself at the dinner table? 식사에서 저 먼저 일어나겠습니다를 어떻게 말해?
b: It's simple. Just say "Excuse me."(=May I be excuse?) 간단해. 그냥 "실례합니다"라고 해.
A: Is rude to leave the table before everyone is finished? 사람들이 식사 끝나기 전에 일어나면 무례한가?
B: It depends on situation. 상황에 따라 다르지.
3.7 What do you do to control your weight
체중조절을 위해 뭘 합니까
When it comes to keeping your weight in check, I think it's important to understand what works for you.
체중조절에서 가장 중요한 건 나한테 맞는 게 뭔지 아는 겁니다.
- keep ~ in check : ~를 조절하다, 억제하다, 관리하다
(ex: I need to keep my emotion in check. 감정을 조절할 필요가 있다.
Make sure to keep your alcohol intake in check. 술섭취량을 조절하세요.
- work for ~ : ~ 에게 효과가 있다
(ex: Trendy workout classes don't work for everyone. 유행을 타는 운동이 모두에게 효과가 있진 않다.
You have to figure out what works for you. 너한테 맞는게 뭔지 알아내야 한다. )
For me calorie counting is counterproductive.
칼로리 세기는 저한테는 효과가 없습니다.
-counterproductive: 역효과 나는 (=backfire)
It always backfires.
항상 역효과가 납니다.
-backfire: 역효과가 난다
(Ex: Crash diets often backfire. 급한 다이어트는 종종 역효과를 낸다
My plan to make him jealous backfired. 그에게 질투를 느끼게하려고 했는데 역효과가 났다)
So I make sure that my diet is nutritious and balanced.
건강하고 균형잡힌 식단을 유지하려고 합니다.
However this means that I have to work out consistently as well.
그렇다면 운동도 꾸준하게 해야한다는 걸 의미합니다.
I go to a Pilates studio because it does wonders for my figure.
필라테스 스튜디오에 가는데, 그게 몸매에 놀라운 효과가 있기 때문입니다.
- Pilates(펄라리스) : 필라테스
- do wonders : 놀라운 효과가 나다
(ex: Getting quality sleep can do wonders for you. 숙면은 건강에 큰 효과가 있다)
I like to mix it up when it comes to cardio in order to keep things interesting.
흥미를 잃지 않기 위해 이것저것 섞여서 유산소 운동을 합니다.
-mix it up : 섞다
(ex: We all need to mix it up every now and then. 우리 모두 이따금 변화를 주는게 좋을 때가 있다
I'd rather not mix it up. 섞고 싶지 않다)
I know cross fit is popular these days, but I 'm not a fan.
요새 크로스핏이 인기지만, 나는 별로 좋아하지 않습니다.
I try not to obsess about the numbers on the scale.
체중계 숫자에 매이지 않으려고 합니다.
- obsess about ~: ~에 집착하다
Because muscle weighs more than fat.
근육은 지방보다 더 무게가 나가기 때문이죠.

A: How do you stay so fit? 어떻게 몸매를 유지해?
B: Well, I watch what I eat. 먹는 걸 주의하거든.
A: What does that mean? 무슨 말이야?
B: It means I'm careful about what I eat. 내가 무엇을 먹는 지 조심한다는 말이야.
