Passion and determination. 열정과 투지입니다.

I will give you an example. Several years ago, I received the cold email from a college student out of the blue.
예를 들어보죠. 수년 전에 한 대학생으로부터 난데없이 이메일을 받았는데요.
  - cold : 판촉의, 일방적인
  - out of the blue: 갑자기, 난데없이 (=unexpectedly, suddenly)

She basically said, 'Sir, I truly admire the work you've done in developing user-friendly software and upgrading it every year.
내용은 기본적으로 다음과 같습니다. 사장님께서 사용하기 쉬운 소프트웨어를 개발하시고 매년 업그레이드한 업적을 진심으로 존경합니다.

but more so, I respect the character traits you had displayed publicly over the years.
하지만 그보다도, 지난 수년동안 사장님이 대중에게 보여주신 성품을 존경합니다.

I can't only  imagine how amazing it would be to learn from you.
사장님으로부터 배울 수 있다면 얼마나 굉장할지 상상할 수도 없습니다.

I'm more than willing to take any day and even  a week off to gain insight how to succeed in business.'
비즈니스 성공방식에 대한 통찰을 배울 수 있다면, 언제든 하루 혹은 몇주라도 시간을 낼 수 있습니다.
  - be more than willing to : 기꺼이 할 용의가 있다

I was impressed by her email, that I invited her and commended her in front of all the employees here.
 그 이메일에 감동해서 초대를 해서 모든 직원들 앞에서 칭찬을 해줬죠.
  - commend : 추천하다, 권하다

I told her that in the last ten year in this business, every single person who reached out to me always wanted something. They wanted money, a job or a favor.
또 이런 이야기도 해줬는데요, 지난 10년간 이 비즈니스를 해오면서 나한테 접근한 사람은 한명도 빠짐없이 뭔가를 나한테 원했습니다. 돈, 일자리, 부탁을 청했죠.

This student was the first person who asked only for the advice.
단순히 조언만 구한 사람은 이 학생이 처음이었습니다.

She was passionate, determined, genuinely wanted to learn and be the best.
I mentored her for a whole week and offered her job upon graduation. 
그녀는 열정이 있었고, 투지가 있고, 배우고 싶어 했으며 최고가 되고 싶어했습니다.
나는 일주일 내내 그녀에게 멘토링을 해주었고, 졸업하자마자 일자리도 제공해주겠다고 약속했어요.

6. 23 The importance of body language in Business  : 2. Avoid shaking your head no matter what.
   비지니스에서 보디랭귀지의 중요성(2) : 어떤 상황에도 고개를 젓는 행동은 피하라.

3. Facial Expressions 얼굴표정
Nothing communicates better than your face.
얼굴보다 소통을 잘 하는 건 없습니다.

[ 정확히 들리지 않음 ] your facial expressions are crucial.
                              얼굴 표정은 중요합니다.

For example, smiles signal kindness and openness.
예를 들어, 웃음은 친절과 솔직함을 표시합니다.

But frowns signal two different things.
하지만 찡그리는 것은 두가지 다른 것을 나타내죠.

A. disagreement or disapproval and B. hard thinking or concentration.
A. 의견 불일치나 못마땅함 B. 깊은 생각에 잠겨 있거나 집중하고 있음.

Be careful with your frowns so that you don't get across the wrong message.
잘못된 뜻을 전달하지 않도록 찡그리는 것에 주의하세요.
  - get across : 전달하다

4. Head movements. 머리움직임

Occasionally nodding in agreement can help you better communicate.
동의하며 고개를 끄덕이는 것은 종종 더 나은 소통하도록 도와줄 수 있습니다.

Avoid  shaking your head no matter what unless you seriously disagree with them.
심각하게 의견이 불일치 하지 않는다면, 어떤 상황에서도 고개를 젓는 행동은 피하세요.

5. Eyes. 눈
Always maintain clear eye contact.
언제나 분명하게 눈을 마주치도록 유지하세요.

Do not look at your hands or clean your fingernails when the other side's talking.
반대편에서 얘기할 때, 자기 손을 보거나 손톱을 정리하지 마세요.

When in a group, take turns making eye contact with each person.
그룹에서는 각각의 사람들과 번갈아가며 눈을 마주칠 수 있도록 하세요.

Don't just focus on one person.
한 사람에게만 집중하지 마세요.





6. 22 The importance of body language in Business : 1. How you carry yourself can make a big difference.

      비지니스에서 보디랭귀지의 중요성(1) : 어떻게 처신하느냐가 큰 차이를 만들 수 있다.

Body language aka 'non verbal communication' often speaks volumes about what you're thinking or how your're feeling.
비커뮤니케이션이라고 알려진 바디랭귀지는 종종 내 생각이나 내 느낌에 대해 많은 것을 말해줍니다.
  - aka : ~라고도 알려진 (약어임 : also known as)
  - speak volumes : 많은 것을 시사하다

How you carry yourself in business situation can even make or break a deal.
비즈니스 상황에서 어떻게 처신하느냐는 거래의 성패를 좌우할 수 있습니다.
  - carry oneself:  행동하다, 처신하다
  - make or break something: ~의 성패를 좌우하다

Consider the following advice.
아래 조언을 유념하세요.

1. Sitting or standing  앉아있거나 서 있을 때
Whether you are sitting or standing, keep your back straight, shoulders upright and head up.
앉아있든 서 있든 허리는 반듯이, 어깨는 꼿꼿하게, 머리는 정면을 향합닌다.

These postures connote confidence and show you're comfortable in the situation.
이런 자세들은 자신감을 의미하며 자신이 처한 상황에 편안함을 느낀다는 걸 표현합니다.
  - connote(커노ㅌ) : 함축하다, 내포하다

Never slouch, put your hands in the pocket and fold your arms.
절대로 웅크리거나 손을 주머니에 꽂아넣던가 팔짱끼지 마세요.
  - slouch : 웅크리다, 구부정하니 서다(앉다)

These are signs of nervousness and discomfort.
불안하거나 불편함의 몸짓입니다.

2. Hands 손
Many people talk with their hands.
많은 사람들이 말할 때 손을 사용합니다.

But they have no idea what their hands are doing when they talk.
하지만 정작 말할 때 손이 무엇을 하고 있는지 전혀 모르고 있죠.

Carefully monitor your hands to avoid any aggressive gestures or distracting movements.
공격적인 제스처나 집중을 떨어뜨리는 행동을 피하세요.
  -  monitor : 감시하다, 주의깊게 살피다

6. 21 Business Language Etiquette: 2. Don't point your finger at him!
       비지니스 언어 에티켓(2) : 그를 비난하지 말아요! 

Continuing on with the importance of tone how you sound in business writing.
비지니스 작문에 있어서, 어감- 어떻게 들리지는지의 중요성에 대해 계속 살펴보겠습니다.

3. If possible, use impartial and gender neutral language.
가능하면, 공정하고 성 중립적인 언어를 사용하라.
  - impartial : 공정한

Bad: Dear sir or Madam, Business man, Chair man
친애하는 경 또는 마담, 비지니스 맨, 체어맨.
(Just imagine  you are a woman and the letter reads, 'dear sir'.
나는 여성인데 편지에 친애하는 경이라고 쓰였다고 생각해보세요.)

Good: To whom it may concern. Business person, Chair person.
담당자분께, 사장님, 의장님
(General and unbiased. 보편적이고 편파적이지 않음.)

Bad: Each member must show his ID at the entrance.
각 멤버는 입구에서 신분증을 제시해야 합니다.
(What about the ladies? 여성들은 어쩌라고요?)

Good: All members must show their ID at the entrance before entering.
모든 멤버는 입장하기전 자신의 신분증을 제시해야 합니다.
(No exceptions. 예외가 없죠.)

4. It is best to put the focus on the reader not you.
초점은 내가 아닌 읽는 사람에게 주는 게 최선입니다.

Bad: I'm sending out your order today.
제가 귀하의 주문을 오늘 발송할 예정입니다.
(Unless it's personal letter, it's not good to begin with  'I'.
사적인 편지가 아니라면 '나'로 시작하는 건 좋지 않음.)

Good: Please be reminded that your order is being shipped as we speak. 
고객님의 상품이 현재 배송중에 있다는 걸 상기해주시기 바랍니다.
  - as we speak : 지금 이 순간, 현재

5. Maintain a professional tone when addressing negative messages.
부정적인 메시지를 다룰 때는 전문가다운 어조를 유지하라.
  - address : 다루다

Bad: Why did you make such a rude comment?
왜 그렇게 무례하게 말했어요?

(You are pointing your finger at him / her. 지금 상대를 비난하고 있음.)
  - point one's finger at : 지적하다, 비난하다

Good: Prejudice remarks are not tolerate in this company.
편견적 발언은 이 회사에서 용인되지 않습니다.

(You are politely but directly pointing out the issue. 정중하면서도 단도직입적으로 문제를 지적함.)

6. 20 Business Language Etiquette: 1. It's not what you say, but how you say.

비지니스 언어 에티켓(1) : '뭘'말하느냐가 아니라,'어떻게'말하느냐가 중요하다.
In any form of business writhing keeping your target in mind is important.
어떤 비즈니스의 작문 형태는 대상을  숙지하는 것이 중요합니다.

But what is more important is your tone, how you sound.
그러나 더 중요한 건 어감, 어떻게 들리는가입니다.

This determines whether the reader will either accept or reject what you say.
이것이 읽는 이로 하여금 수용 혹은 거절을 결정하기 때문입니다.

Whether you are writing a business report, proposal or email, there is an appropriate tone of voice for each.
  - appropriate : 적절한
내가 작성하는 것이 업무 보고서든, 제안서든 이메일이든 각각 마다 적절한 톤이 있습니다.

1. Show humble yet professional confidence.
겸손하면서도 프로페셔널한 자신감을 보이라.

Bad: I have all the qualifications vital for this position.
나쁜 예: 저는 이 자리에 필수조건을 모두 갖추고 있습니다.

Audacious and over confident. 거만하고 지나치게 자신만만합니다.
 - audacious : 대담한, 뻔뻔한

Good:  I believe my qualifications in the area financial analysis  meet the requirements for this job.
좋은 예: 제가 금융분석 분야에 갖춘 자격 요건들이 이 자리의 요구조건에 부합한다고 생각합니다.
  - meet the requirements : 조건을 충족시키다. 요건에 부합하다

Gentle yet confident. 부드러우면서도 자신감 있습니다.

2. Be direct but polite and sincere.
직설적이나 정중하고 진정성있게.

Bad: Your network will crash if you don't follow the direction carefully.
나쁜 예: 설명을 신중히 따르지 않으면 네트워크는 고장나고 말거에요.

This sounds like you scolding or criticizing.
이건 꾸짖거나 비난하는 것처럼 들립니다.

Good: Please note that you may experience network systems failure, if the instruction is not properly followed.
좋은 예: 지침대로 행하지 않으면 네트워크가 고장날 수도 있다는 걸 유의하세요.
  - please note that : ~를 기억하시오, 유의하시오

Respectful yet direct. 정중하면서도 직접적이죠.

6. 18 Biz news : Pay with fingerprints.

       비즈 뉴스 : 지문으로 지불하기 

Cash and credit cards may soon become a thing of the past. 

현금과 신용카드는 머지 않아 과거의 산물이 될 수 있다. 

  - a thing of the past : 더이상 존재하지 않는 것, 과거의 산물 

According to a Japanese newspaper, Japan has begun testing a program that will allow tourists to pay for goods using their only fingerprints. 

 한 일본 신문에 따르면, 일본은 관광객이 자신의 지문을 이용해 상품을 구매할 수 있는 프로그램을 테스트 하기 시작했다. 

Upon arriving at the airport, all they have to do is register your fingerprints, personal data and credit card information at a designated kiosk. 

공항에 도착하면 지정 키오스트에서 지문, 개인정보, 신용카드 정보를 등록하면 된다.

  - designated(데직네이릿): 지정된

Its government is hoping that the new system will curtail crime and ease the worries of tourists about cash or credit cards.

일본 정부는 새로운 시스템이 범죄를 줄이고, 현금과 신용카드에 대한 우려를 완화해줄것으로 기대하고 있다. 

  - curtail(커ㄹ테일) : 축소 / 삭감/ 단축 시키다

The program is set to kick off this year in 300 shops, hotels and restaurants  in Japan's popular tourist destinations.

이 프로그램은 일본의 인기있는 관광지에 있는 300개의 가게, 호텔, 레스토랑에서 올해부터 실행될 예정이다. 

  - kick off : 시작되다, 개시하다

They are hoping the system will be fully operational throughout the country by 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

그들은 이 시스템이 2020년 도쿄 올림픽까지 전국에서 완벽히 시행될 수 있기를 희망한다.

  - operational : 사용가능한 

  -  throughout: 도처에, 내내

The system has been tested in a  theme park recently and it was well-received by all the customers especially those with children.  

이 시스템은 최근 한 테마파크에서 실험을 거쳤고, 모든 고객들 특히 어린이를 동반한 고객들로부터 호평을 받았다. 

  -be well-received by : ~에 의해 좋은 평가를 받다

They said it saved them the trouble of taking their wallets every time they have to pay for something.

그들은 무언가를 살 때마다 지갑을 꺼내야 하는 불편함을 덜어주었다고 말했다.

1. Just like Korea, Singapore is also hierarchical society that is drawn from Confucionism.
한국과 마찬가지로 싱가포르는 유교에서 비롯된 계급사회입니다.
  - be drawn from~ : ~에서 비롯되다, ~ 오다
  - hierarchical(하이어아ㄹ끼껄): 계급에 따른

They emphasize respectful age and status even blind obedience to one's elders.
싱가포르사람들은 나이와 지위에 따른 존중, 연장자에 대한 맹종까지도 강조합니다.
  - blind obedience : 무조건적 복종, 맹종

2. It is a multi-ethnic society where Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions coexist.
싱가포르는 중국, 말레이. 인도 전통이 공존하는 다민족 사회입니다.
  - coexist: 공존하다, 동시에 있다 (=exist together)

The three main ethnic groups are culturally and religiously diverse.
주된 세 민족 집단은 문화적으로 종교적으로 다양합니다.

3. Singaporeans will generally avoid using 'no' in answering questions.
싱가포르 사람들은 질문에 대한 답으로 '노'란 말의 사용을 피합니다.

They tend to say, maybe, not sure, I'll try or  I'll see what I can do.
어쩌면, 확실히 모르겠다, 노력해볼게 또는 내가 뭘 할 수 있는지 볼게요 등으로 말하는 경향이 있다.

All these responses actually mean no.
이런 대답들은 확실히 '노'라는 뜻입니다.

If you hear them sucking in air between their teeth  after question, it is definitely a 'No'.
질문을 받은 후 잇 사이로 공기를 들이마시는 소리가 들리면 그건 확실히 노입니다.

4. Personal relationships are cornerstone of all business relationships.
사적인 관계는 모든 비즈니스 관계의 초석입니다.
  - cornerstone: 토대, 기초

Take time to get to know each person in a meeting or negotiation.
시간을 내어 미팅이나 협상에서 한 사람 한사람을 알아가도록 하세요.

It usually takes several encounters to build trust and form a long-term relationship.
신뢰를 구축하고 장기적인 관계를 형성하기 까지는 대개 여러번의 만남이 필요합니다.

1. Singaporeans are highly sensitive about saving face in all areas of their lives.
싱가포르 사람들은 일상 모든 면에서 체면지키는 걸 중요하게 생각합니다.
  - save face : 체면을 지키다

It is a mark of personal qualities such as good name, good character and being held in high esteem by others.
체면이란 좋은 이름, 좋은 성격 사람들로부터 존경받기와 같은 개인적 특질의 표시입니다.

This is perhaps most important as you strive for harmonious relationship with them.
이건 싱가포르 사람들과 좋은 관계를 유지하는데 가장 중요한 부분일 겁니다.
  - strive : 열심히 노력하다, 분투하다

2. Always speak directly and get right to the point especially when discussing money.
돈에 대해 이야기할 때는 직설적이고 단조직입적으로 말하세요.

They are usually fast paced and make decision quickly with reference to finance.
금전과 관련해서는 업무진행이 빠르고 결정도 신속합니다.
 - with reference to : ~에 관해서 (=about, referring to)

3. The government financially supports many of the large corporations.
싱가포르 정부에서는 많은 대기업에 많은 재정적 지원을 줍니다.

This unique system is known for as high efficiency and corruption-free business style.
이런 독특한 시스템은 고효율및 부패없는 비지니스 스타일로 잘 알려져 있습니다.

4. Singapore has strict laws that have stiff fines, possible jail sentences  or even death.

싱가포르 법은 엄격해서 엄청난 벌금, 징역형이나 사형까지 실행가능합니다. 

  - stiff : 비싼, 과도한

You should never do the following.
다음의 행위는 절대 하지 마세요.

Jaywalk, smoke in public or in air-conditioned buildings, bring in drugs to the country, litter or chew gum.
무단횡단, 공공장소나 냉방장치가 된 곳에서 흡연, 불법 약물 반입, 쓰레기 투기나 껌씹기.

6. 15 International business (Singapore) : You'd better chop chop and learn Mandarin.

     국제 비지니스(싱가포르 편) : 서둘러서 만다린어를 배우는 게 좋을 거에요
Kent, I think it would be great  if you learn mandarin.
As you know, most of our clients are Chinese.
켄트, 내 생각엔 당신이 만다린을 배운다면 좋을 거 같아요. 알다시피, 고객 대부분이 중국인이잖아요.

Great idea, but I don't know if I will have time.
You know how crazy my work schedule is.
좋은 아이디어인데, 그럴 시간이 될지 모르겠어요.
내 일정이 얼마나 정신없는지 알잖아요.

Hey, I don't want to turn you out like Jimmy. I'm sure you remember him.
He was young, bright and very smart.
지미처럼 되지 않았으면 해서요. 그 친구를 기억할거에요.
젊고 똑똑하고 아주 영리했죠.

But he can't make it  because he fail to understand our client's language and culture.
하지만 고객의 언어와 문화를 제대로 이해하지 못해 일을 제대로 하지 못했죠.
  - can't make it : 쓸모없다, 형편없다 (싱가포르식 표현: 영어에선 도착하지 못하다라는 뜻)

As a result, many of his projects were a clay-pot.
그 결과 그 친구 프로젝트 대부분이 완전 실패작이었잖아요.
  - clay-pot: 실패작 (싱가포르식 표현)

Whoa! Is that serious? But everyone speaks English in Singapore.
워우, 그거 정말이에요? 하지만 싱가포르 사람 대부분이 영어를 하잖아요.

Most people are actually bilingual here.
They speak English plus Mandarin, Malay, Tamil or other dialects.
대부분이 이중언어자들이죠.
영어 외에 만다린, 말레이어, 타밀 어 또는 다른 지역 언어를 할줄 아니까요.
  - dialect : 방언, 사투리

Communication can easily spoil if you don't understand the nuance of their particular culture. So You'd better chop chop and learn Mandarin right away.
상대문화가 가진 뉘앙스를 이해하지 못하면 소통은 필시 실패하게 되죠.
그러니까 서둘러 만다린을 배우는 게 좋아요.
  - chop- chop : 서두르다 (hurry up)

  - nuance : 뉘앙스, 미묘한 차이

     국제 비지니스(싱가포르 편) : 그냥 서서 구경만 하지 말아요

Now that you ready to work with us, I want to give you the lowdown on the leaders and staffs of this company. By the way, this is strictly between you and me. 
이제 우리와 일할 준비가 되셨으니, 우리 회사의 리더들과 직원들에 대해 설명해 드릴게요. 그런데 이건 철저히 우리 둘만 아는 겁니다.
  - lowdown : 실정, 내막, 진상

Oh, Don't worry, my leaps are sealed. Let's start with the CEO.
걱정말아요. 저 입 무거워요. CEO부터 시작합시다.

He is generally pretty cool. But he likes to arrow people around at times.
He also hates when people use eye power  in a team effort.This really irritates him.
보통은 쿨하시지만, 가끔씩 이래라 저래라 명령을 잘 하시죠. 또 팀작업중 구경만 하는 사람을 싫어하죠. 그런 걸 정말 거슬려 하시죠.
  - use eye power : 구경만 하다, 지켜보다
  - arrow people around : 사람들에게 명령하다

Got it. I shouldn't have any problem with that. What about my boss, director Lim?
What's he like?
알았어요. 그건 전혀 문제되지 않을거 같네요. 제 상사 림 부장님은 어떤가요? 어떤 분인가요?

He is very professional and works harder than most people.
One thing you should know about him is that he is a stickler for details.
림부장님은 프로페셔널 하신데다 웬만한 사람보다 열심히 일해요. 부장님에 대해 한가지 알아둘 건, 세세한 사항에 까다롭습니다.
  - stickler (for) : ~에 까다로운 사람, 엄격한 사람

Whether you revert to emails or hoot something for work always double check the details. If there's anything you catch no ball, just ask him directly.
이메일에 답장하거나 업무상 뭐라도 구매할 땐 세세한 것을 항상 거듭 확인 하세요. 이해가 안되면 직접 물어보세요.
  - catch no ball : 이해가 안간다 (=don't get it)
  - revert : 답장하다  (싱가폴 표현)
  - hoot : 구매하다 (싱가폴 표현)
