2.12 Talk about a time when you unexpectedly ran into an old friend
   옛 친구를 우연히 만났던 경험을 이야기해봅시다

I remember bumping into an old friend at a shopping mall a few month ago.
몇 달 전 쇼핑몰에 갔다가 우연히 오랜 친구를 만난 적이 있습니다.
  -bump into: 우연히 마주치다
  (ex: It was nice bumping into you the other day. 며칠전에 너 우연히 봐서 좋았어.
       I don't want to bump into my ex ever again. 옛 애인을 다시는 만나고 싶지 않다)

I was looking at some shoes I wanted to buy and someone who looked very familiar said hi to me.
사고 싶은 신발을 보고 있었던 참이었는데, 낯익은 누군가가 내게 인사를 했다.
  -look familiar : 낯이 익다 (<->look unfamiliar 낯설다)
  (ex: I think I met him before because he looks very familiar. 얼굴이 낯이 익은게 언젠가 그를 본거 같다.)

She was an old friend back from school.
예전에 학교 친구였습니다.

We used to be pretty close back then and fell out of touch after we graduated.
그 당시 우린 꽤 친했는데 졸업 후 연락이 끊겼습니다.
  -be pretty close: 꽤 친하다 (=be quite tight)
  (ex: They were pretty close growing up. 자라면서 우린 꽤 친했습니다.
        I was pretty close to my brother before he got married. 동생이 결혼하기 전에 꽤 친했었습니다.)
  -back then : 그 당시에
  -fall out of touch : 연락이 끊기다
  (ex: Unfortunately we fall out of touch with most of our high school friends. 유감스럽게도 대부분 고등학교 친구들과 연락이 끊겼습니다.

We hadn't seen each other for a long time.
오랫동안 보지 못했습니다.

She had changed quite a lot, I didn't recognize her at first.
그녀가 많이 변해서 처음엔 못알아봤습니다.
  -recognize: 알아보다
  (ex: Sorry, I didn't recognize you 미안 너 못알아봤어.)

She had gained some weight and had shorter hair.
살이 좀 쪘고, 머리가 짧아졌습니다.

Anyway we said hi and promised to meet again  later on.
어쨌든 인사하고 나중에 다시 만나기로 약속했습니다.

It was quite nice to run into a friend like that.
우연찮게 친구만나니 참 좋았습니다.
  -run into : 우연히 마주치다
  (ex: I ran into my boss at a restaurant. : 상사를 식당에서 우연히 마주쳤다.
       Running into an old friend can be a nice surprise. 오랜 친구를 우연찮게 만나는건 즐거운 일이다)

I keep in touch with her now off and on
지금은 그녀와 종종 연락합니다.
  -keep in touch with : 연락하다 (<-> fall out of touch with)

A: I ran into my ex at the subway station today. 오늘 지하철에서 옛 여자친구 만났어.
B: No kidding, did you say hi? 말도 안돼. 인사했어?
A: No, she was with another guy. I don't want to run into her again. 아니, 다른 남자랑 같이 있더라고. 다시는 그녀를 마주치고 싶지 않아.
B: Oh I see.  알만하다..



2.11 talk about the health benefits of Kimchi 

Kimchi is a spicy fermented cabbage dish Koreans eat everyday.
김치는 맵게 발효된 배추음식으로 한국인들이 매일 먹습니다
  -fermented: 발효된

It is one the staple foods on the Korean dinner table.
밥상에서 주요 음식 중 하나입니다.

There are many different varieties of Kimchi.
김치 종류도 다양합니다.
 -variety: 종류
  (ex: There are many different varieties of cars you can choose from. 선택할 수 있는 차의 종류가 매우 다양하다)

The most typical type is kimchi made from Chinese cabbage.
가장 일반적인 김치는 배추로 만든겁니다.
  - Chinese cabbage : 배추

Korean kimchi has a lot of health benefits.
김치는 건강상 이점이 많습니다.
  -health benefits :건강한 이점
  (ex: Regular physical exercise brings about a lot of  health benefits. 규칙적인 운동은 건강상 많은 이점을 불러옵니다.)


In fact Kimchi was selected as one the healthiest foods in the world.
사실 김치는 세상에서 가장 건강한 음식 중 하나로 뽑힌 바 있습니다.

       He was selected as the team leader. 그는 팀리더로 선정되었다. )

It is very rich in vitamins.
비타민이 풍부합니다.
  - rich in : 풍부하다
  (ex: Most fruits are rich in vitamins. 과일은 비타민이 풍부합니다)

Plus it is known to strengthen our immune system.
또 면역체계를 강화시켜준다고 알려져 있습니다.
  -be known to : 알려져 있다
  -strengthen one's immune system 면역체계를 강화시켜주다
  (ex: Playing outdoors can strengthen child's immune system. 아이들을 밖에 뛰어놀게 하는건 면역체계를 강화시켜 줍니다
        Strengthen your immune system is very important. 면역체계를 강화시키는 건 중요합니다.)

I have kimchi every single day when I have meals.
밥 먹을 때 매일같이 김치를 먹습니다.

I actually had some today during lunch.
사실 오늘 점심 먹으면서 먹었습니다.

Koreans don't think Kimchi is spicy, but foreigners may find it a bit spicy.
한국인은 김치가 맵다고 생각하지 않지만, 외국인은 좀 맵다고 여길 수 있습니다.
  -find: ~라고 생각하다. 여기다
 (ex: I find it this question is difficult to solve  이 문제가 풀기 어렵다고 생각한다)

B: Yes, it was a bit too spicy for me. 응, 나는 좀 많이 매웠어.
A: Yeah, it can be like that when you first try it. 처음 먹으면 그럴 수 있어.
B: A lot of my friends back home love it. I think it's an acquire taste.  많은 고향 친구들이 좋아해. 먹다보면 익숙해지는 거 같아.



2.10 Talk about the substitute holiday system of Korea
       한국의 대체휴일에 대해 이야기해봅시다

  -get an extra day off : 대체 휴일 (substitute holiday)

Since 2014, The substitute holiday system has been in affected in Korea.
2014년 이래 대체휴일이 발효중입니다.
  - substitute 임시의, 대체의
  (ex: He is a substitute teacher 그는 대체 선생님이야.)
 - be in affect 발효되다, 효력이 있다, 영향을 주다
  (ex: A storm warning will be in affect today. 오늘 폭풍경보가 발효될 예정입니다
       The new law already is in affect. 새로운 법안이 이미 발효중이다. )

The substitute holiday system applies to Lunar new year's day, Chuseok and Children's day.
대체휴일은 음력설과 추석, 어린이날에 적용됩니다.
  -apply to : 적용되다

Under the system when these national holidays fall on a weekend or another holiday,
이런 공휴일이 주말이나 다른 휴일에 떨어지면
  -fall on a 요일: 특정 요일에 떨어지다

the Government designates the following work day as a non-working day.
 정부는 그 다음 근무일을 휴일로 지정합니다.
  -work day: 근무일 / non-working day: 비근무일
   (ex: This work day feels a lot longer than others. 오늘은 다른날보다 근무가 훨씬 길게 느껴지네요.
        How many non-working days do we have this year? 올해는 근무하지 않는 날이 얼마나 되나요?)

This year since the first day of the lunar new year holiday fell on a Sunday, we got an extra day off on Wednesday.
올해 음력설의 연휴 첫날이 일요일이라 수요일에 휴일을 하루 더 얻었습니다.
  -fall on a Sunday : 일요일에 떨어지다
  (ex: My birthday falls on a Sunday this year so I might celebrate early. 올해 생일이 일요일이라 파티를 좀 일찍 해얄거 같다
       I used to get upset when a national holiday fell on a Sunday. 공휴일이  일요일이면 속상했다)


This system is being welcomed by the public because they don't lose any holidays throughout the year. 
일년 내내 어떤 휴일도 잃지 않기 때문에 대중들은 이 시스템을 환영했습니다.
  - throughout the year 일년 내내
  (ex: My weight goes up and down throughout the year 내 체중은 일년 내내 오르락내리락 합니다)
     What was your biggest regret throughout the year? 한해동안 가장 후회되는게 뭔가요?)


Plus as they are more extended holidays, people have been planing longer trips to various locations.
게다가 사람들은 더 긴 휴일을 쉬기 때문에 다양한 곳으로 긴 여행을 계획합니다.

B: Really? then are you taking the whole week off? 정말? 일주일 통으로 쉬는거야?
A: Yeah, I'm planning on going on a short trip. 응 단기여행갈거야.

2.9 Talk about presents you gave and received during the family holidays 
     명절동안 주고받은 선물을 이야기해봅시다.

Gift giving is a big holiday tradition in Korea.
한국에서 선물주는 건 중요한 전통입니다.
  -  big holiday tradition : 중요한 전통
 (ex: Making 송편 is a big holiday tradition during 추석 in Korea. 한국에서 송편만들기는 추석의 중요한 전통입니다)

For the lunar new year holiday, I bought my family various gifts.
음력설에 가족들에게 다양한 선물을 했습니다.
 - buy  somebody ~ : Somebody 에게 ~ 사주다
  (ex: I bought my fiancee a gift she would never forget : 약혼녀가 절대 잊지 못할 선물을 주었습니다.
       I take great pleasure in buying gifts for my family 가족들에게 선물 주는 게 무척 기쁩니다)

First I bought my children some new toys.
먼저 아이들에겐 새 장난감을 사줬구요.

My children also got some cash-gifts from their grand parents and uncles.
또 아이들은 할머니 할아버지와 삼촌들에게 현금을 선물로 받았습니다.
  - cash-gift: 현금선물
  (ex: It's common to give and get cash-gifts on a wedding day in Korea. 결혼식에 현금을 선물로 주고받는게 일상적입니다. )

Children bow to the  elders in the family and received money as a gift.
아이들은 집안 어른들에게 절하고 돈을 선물로 받습니다.
- bow to the  elders : 어른에게 절하다
(ex: It's a longtime custom to bow to the elders. 어른에게 절하는 건 오랜 전통이다.

This is called 세배Sebae, and it's New year's day custom in Korea.
세배라고 하는건데요, 한국의 설날 풍습입니다.

As for my parents I bought them a new coat and a new pair of shoes.
부모님께는 새 코트와 신발을 사드렸습니다.
 -as for~: ~에 있어서는 (화제전환용)

For my brother's family I bought them some clothes for their new-born. 
동생가족에게는 신생아에게 옷을 사줬습니다.
  - new-born : 갓 태어난, 신생아 (newly born baby)

I received various types of fruits as holiday gifts.
명절 선물로 다양한 과일을 받았습니다.
  -various types of ~: 다양한 종류
  (ex: I want to visit various types of beaches. 다양한 해변을 가고 싶다.
       I love to listen to various types of music. 다양한 음악 듣는 걸 좋아합니다.)

I got a box of apples and pears.
사과와 배를 한 상자씩 받았죠.

They were sent by companies and people I knew.
지인과 회사에서 보냈습니다.

A: What did you give your parents for the lunar new year holiday? 부모님께 설날에 뭐 드렸어?
B: I gave them some ginseng products.  인삼제품 사드렸어.
A: Oh, really?아, 정말?
B: A ha. Health-related gifts are very common for the holidays. 응, 건강제품은 명절 선물로 매우 흔하거든.




2.8 What kinds of food did you have during family holidays?

My family made a lot of holiday food for the lunar New Year holiday.
우리 가족은 음력 설날에 명절 음식을 많이 만들었습니다.
  - holiday food : 명절음식
  (ex: My family makes holiday food all together 우리 가족은 다함께 명절음식을 만들었습니다)

First, we made some rice cake soup in the morning.
먼저, 아침에 떡국을 끓였습니다.

Eating rice cake soup on the first day of the year is a long time Korean tradition.
새해 첫날 떡국을 먹는 건 한국의 오랜 전통입니다.
  -long time tradition: 오랜 전통을 가진, 오랫동안 이어온
  (ex: People consider watching the first sunrise of the year a long time tradition. 새해 첫날 일출을 보는게 오랜 전통으로 여겨진다.
       My family has a long time tradition we'd like to keep in the family 우리 가족은 지키고 싶은 오랜 전통이 있습니다)


We consider ourselves a year older when we eat the soup.
떡국을 먹을 때 한 살 더 먹는다고 생각합니다.

Plus we also  made some pan-fried dishes called Jeon.
더불어 기름에 부쳐먹는 전을 만들었습니다.
  -pan-fried : 기름에 지지는

We coat it veggies, sea food and  meat with batter and then pan-fried them in oil.
채소와 해산물 고기를 반죽을 입혀 기름을 둘러 지집니다.
  -coat:  반죽을 입히다
  -batter : 밀가루 반족
 (ex: Pan-frying Jeon is a lot of work. so my entire family helps out. 전 부치는데 손이 많이 가서 온가족이 돕습니다.)

Most Korean families make Jeon for the holidays.
대부분 한국 가정에선 명절에 전을 부칩니다.

Next we also made some Japchae which is the dish made from glass noodles and thinly sliced veggies.
그 다음 당면과 얇게 썬 채소로 잡채를 만들었습니다.
  -glass noodle: 당면
  -thinly: 얇게

The ingredients are mixed and stir-fried on the pan.
재료들을 다 섞어서 프라이팬에 볶습니다.
  -stir-fried : 볶다

A: So how did you spend the holidays? 명절 어땠어?
B: All I remember is eating. 기억나는 거라곤 먹는 거 뿐이었어.
A: Yeah I tend to do that too. 맞어 나도 그랬어.
B: I think I've gained some holiday weight. 살이 좀 찐거 같아.
