How about과 What about의 차이는 무엇인가요? 2

[Context]

As a quickly review from yesterday, 'how about' usually suggests something,

어제 내용을 잠시 복습하자면, how about은 뭔가 제안할 때 쓰는 표현이고,

'what about' commonly refers to an object or implys potetial problems.

what about은 보통 반대의견을 나타내거나 잠재적 문제를 말합니다. 

- refer to: 언급하다, 말하다

- imply: 암시하다 

However there are times when both expressions can have equivalent meaning. 

하지만 이 두 표현이 똑같은 의미를 지닐 때가 있습니다. 

- equivalent: 동등한, 맞먹는 

They can be used in the exactly same context.

다시 말해 두 표현이 정확히 같은 의미로 사용될 수 있다는 거죠.

- in other words : 달리 말해서

For example,; 

예를 보시죠. 

I work at EBS radio. How about you?

저는 EBS 라디오에서 일합니다. 당신은요?

I work at EBS radio. what about you?

저는 EBS 라디오에서 일합니다. 당신은요?

Both quesions are asking where do you work. 

두 질문 모두 어디에서 일하는지 묻고 있습니다. 

Juchi and Kalyn will work over time today, how about you?

주치와 케일린은 오늘 야근합니다. 당신은요?

Juchi and Kalyn will work over time today, what about you?

주치와 케일린은 오늘 야근합니다. 당신은요?

Both questions are asking what will you do.

완전 같습니다. 모두 당신은 무엇을 할거냐고 묻고 있습니다. 

I enjoyed the speech, how about you?

연설을 잘 들었어요. 당신은요? 

I enjoyed the speech, what about you?

Both questions are asking did you enjoy it.

두 질문 모두 당신은 연설이 즐거웠냐고 묻습니다.

What is the difference between "How about" and "What about"?
How about과 What about의 차이는 뭔가요?

Well, they are similar in many ways, there are some distinctive contexts where they must be used differently.
여러면에서는 비슷하지만, 몇몇 독특한 문맥에서는 분명 다르게 사용될 수 있어요.
  - distinctive: 독특한, 특이한

The prime difference is this.;
핵심적인 차이는 이겁니다.
  - the prime difference: 핵심적인/주요한 차이

"How about" is commonly used to suggest something,  whereas "What about" refers to a potential problem.
 how about은 일반적으로 뭔가 제안할 때 쓰는 표현이고, what about은 잠재적인 문제를 언급할 때 쓰는 표현이죠.
  -wheareas: 반면에   (두가지 사실을 비교, 대조할 때 씀) (=but, however)

'How about' examples;
how about의 예입니다.

I'm free on Sunday. How about going to a movie?
일요일에 시간 되는데, 영화보러 가는거 어때요?

=Let's go watch a movie.
그건 영화보러 갑시다는 뜻입니다.

How about we take a breather and continue in 15 minutes?
잠깐 쉬었다가 15분 뒤에 다시 시작하면 어때요?
  - take a breather: 잠깐 휴식을 취하다, 숨을 돌리다 (breather는 옛날식 표현임)

=Why don't we rest for 15 minutes before continuing?

계속 진행하기 전에 15분 쉴까요, 라는 뜻입니다.

'What about' examples;
what about의 예입니다.

You told Sue to come at 10 o'clock? What about a meeting with our clients?
수에게 10시에 오라고 했어요? 우리 고객미팅은 어쩌자구요?

=We have a meeting with our clients at 10. You can't tell Sue to come at that time.
고객과의 미팅이 10시에 있으니 수에게 그때 오라고 말할 수 없다는 뜻입니다.

Let's go on a trip.
우리 여행가요.

I'd love to but what about my Enlgish class?
그러고 싶은데, 영어수업은 어떡하죠?

=It would be great to go on a trip but I can't miss my English class.
여행을 가고 싶지만 영어수업을 빠질 수 없다는 뜻입니다.

BRYCE: Hi, Grandpa. 할아버지. 

 

CHET: Juli told me about the eggs. 달걀에 대한 이야기 들었다. 

You know, Bryce... 브라이스.

One's character is set at an early age.

성격은 어린 시절에 형성된단다.

I'd hate to see you swim out so far you can't swim back. 

너무 빗나가면 고치기가 어려워.

 

BRYCE: Sir? 네?

 

CHET: It's about honesty, son. 정직에 관한 거란다. 

Sometimes a little discomfort in the beginning

처음엔 좀 어색하게 느껴져도 나중에 큰 일을 예방해주지.

CHET: Must've been a spectacular view. 정말 전망이 좋았겠구나. 

She's quite a girl. 줄리는 대단한 아이다.

Some of us get dipped in flat... some in satin... some in gloss.

밋밋한 사람도 있고, 반짝이는 사람도 있고, 빛나는 사람도 있단다.

- satin: 고운, 광택 나는

- gloss: 윤나는, 빛나는

But every once in a while you find someone who's iridescent.

하지만 누구나 한번은 무지개처럼 찬란한 사람을 만난단다.
