9. 16 Talk about when the sink or the toilet got clogged up.
        세면대나 변기가 막혔던 때를 얘기해봅시다

The sink in our bathroom once got clogged up. 
화장실에 있는 세면대가 막혔던 적이 있었습니다.
  - get clogged up: 막히다

The water from tap would not go down the drain
물이 배수구로 내려가지 않았죠.
   - drain: 배수구, 배수관

We tried using a chemical drain cleaner that had no affect.
뚜러펑같은 걸 넣어서 뚫으려고 했는데, 효과가 없었습니다.
  - chemical drain cleaner: 배수관 화학클리너
  - have no affect: 영향이 없다, 효과가 없다

I did an internet search for some home remedies.
인터넷으로 응급처지법을 검색해봤습니다.
  - do an internet search : 인터넷 검색을 하다
  -  home remedy: 민간요법, 응급처치법

A post showed how to bend a clothes hanger into a hook.
포스트는 옷걸이를 펴서 갈고리처럼 만드는 법을 설명해줬습니다.
  - clothes hanger: 옷걸이

You can then use it to get at the blockage.
막힌 상태를 뚫기 위해 그걸 이용할 수 있습니다.
  - get at something: ~ 이르다, 접하다

It worked like a charm. 거짓말처럼 해결됐어요./ 효과가 아주 좋았죠.
  - work like a charm : 기적처럼 이뤄지다/성공하다

Another time, the toilet was backed up. 다른 때는 화장실이 막혔습니다.
  -back up : 꽉 막히다

I tried to fix it with plunger. that didn't work.
압축기로 뚫으려고 했습니다만, 소용이 없었어요.
  - plunger : 플런저, 압축기

We had to call a plumber. 배관공을 불러야했습니다.
  - plumber: 배관공

He found the bunch of cotton swabs in the piping.
관에 면봉이 한뭉치 있는 걸 발견했습니다.
  - cotton swab : 면봉

I felt bad because I was the culprit. 제가 주범이었기때문에 기분이 안 좋았습니다.
  - culprit(컬프릿) : 주범, 장본인

A: You look a sight. 너 좀 몰골이 초췌하다./ 꼴이 엉망이다.
B: That's because I couldn't take a shower. 샤워를 못했거든.
A: Why not? 왜?
B: Our bath tap is clogged up. 욕조수도가 막혔거든.








9. 13 Talk about time when you got a medical check-up   
        건강검진을 받은 경험을 이야기해봅시다.

On my family's advice,  I recently received medical check-up.
가족의 조언에 따라 최근 건강검진을 받았습니다.
  - medical check-up: 건강검진
  - on someone's advice : ~의 조언에 따라

It was comprehensive examination. 종합검진이었습니다.

The day before, I had to abstain from eating.
하루 전에는 금식해야했습니다.
  - abstain(업쓰떼인):  금하다, 절제하다

The check-up got under way with simple measurements.
단순한 측정으로 검사가 시작됐죠.
  - get under way: 진행하다, 시작하다

Members of the staff measured my weight,  eye sight, blood pressure and lung capacity
직원들이 몸무게, 시력, 혈압, 폐활량을 측정했습니다.
  - lung capacity: 폐활량

A nurse drew some blood. 간호사가 피를 뽑았습니다.
  - draw : 뽑다, 채혈하다

I also submitted sample of urine. 소변샘플도 냈습니다.
  - submit : 제출하다
  - urine(유런-): 소변

Then the more in-depth examinations began. 정밀검사가 시작됐습니다.
  -  in-depth examinations: 정밀검사

A doctor administered ultrasound test 초음파 검사를 했습니다.
  - ultrasound test (어울트라 사운드): 초음파 검사
  - administer: 투여하다, 관리하다, 검사하다

I also received endoscopy inspections. 내시경 검사도 받았습니다.
   - endoscopy 엔도스코삐 : 내시경

Two weeks later, I got the test results. 2 주 뒤에 검사결과를 받았습니다.

To my relief, everything seems normal. 다행히도 모든 게 정상이었습니다

A: Did you get the results from your medical check-up? 건강검진 결과 받았어?
B: I did. yesterday. 응, 어제.
A: How are they? 뭐래?
B: I'm as fit as a fiddle. 완전 건강해. (*팽팽히 당겨진 바이올린 활처럼 탄탄하다는 뜻)

9. 12 Talk about a time when food ordered in was delivered late
       배달음식이 늦었던 경험을 이야기해봅시다.

At my office, often we are strapped for time.
사무실에서 시간에 쫓길 때가 있습니다.
  - be strapped for : ~에 쪼들리는, 쫓기는

When that happens, my coworkers and I order in lunch.
그러면 동료들하고 점심을 배달시킵니다.
  - order in : 배달시키다. (Let's order in. 시켜먹자)

We take it in turns to decide where to order from.
우린 돌아가면서 어디서 배달시킬지 정합니다.
  - take it in turns : 돌아가면서 하다 (영국식표현임 = take turns)

One time we ordered boxed meals.  한번은 도시락을 시켰습니다.

However the restaurant was overwhelmed with orders.
그런데 식당이 주문이 폭주했습니다.
  - be overwhelmed: 압도당하다, 가슴벅차다

It took the better part of an hour for our food to arrive.
음식이 도착하는데 거의 한시간이 걸렸습니다
  - the better part of: 거의, 대부분, (=almost)

By then, it was well passed our lunch time. 그때는 점심시간이 지난지 한참지났죠.
  - well: 훨씬 (강조 = way)

 We barely had time to eat. 먹을 시간이 없었습니다.

Last week, I ordered pizza home, I waited and waited, but the pizza didn't arrive.
지난주에는 집에서 피자를 시켰습니다. 엄청 기다렸는데, 피자가 안왔죠.
(영어에서 반복하면 그만큼 강조해주는 역할.)

I called the restaurant, they said pizza is on its way.
레스토랑에 전화했더니, 피자가 배달중이라고 했습니다.
  - on my/ the/your/its way: 가는(오는) 중인

It took another thirty minutes to get our food.  피자가 오는데 30분이 더 걸렸다.

I had low blood sugar and I was angry. 당이 떨어져서 화가 났다.

A: Why are you so angry? 왜 그렇게 화났어?
B: It's been over an hour and pizza still isn't  here. 한 시간이 넘었는데, 아직도 피자가 안왔어.
A: You should complain the restaurant. 식당에 항의해.
B: I will. I'm going to give them a piece of my mind. 그럴거야. 강력하게 항의할거야.
