[스피치] 오바마 기조연설 2004년

이 연설은 2004년 민주당 전당대회에서 오바마가 한 기조연설이다.
당시 오바마는 상원의원이 아니라 일리노이 주 상원의원으로 우리로 치면 도의원에 불과했다. 정치적 지위도 낮고 그가 누군지 알아보는 이도 극히 드물었다. 그런데 이 연설 하나로 오바마는 대통령감으로 거론되기 시작했다. 오바마의 기적을 시작하게 한 연설은 어땠을까?
오바마는 자기 가족 이야기로 연설을 시작해, 미국의 역사적인 순간들과 그를 결부시켜 한 편의 서사시를 써냈다. 왜 민주당이 대선에서 승리해야 하는지, 그리고 미국에 필요한게 무엇인지 조목조목 따진다. 오바마현상을 만들어내었던, 그 연설을 한번 따라가 봅니다.

On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, land of Lincoln,
let me express my deep gratitude for the privilege of addressing this convention.

Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let's face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely. My father was foreign  student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya. He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack. His father, my grandfather, was a cook, a domestic servant to the British.

But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son. Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place: America, which stood as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.

하지만 할아버지는 자신의 아들에 대해 더 큰 꿈을 가졌습니다. 노력과 인내심을 통해 아버지는 장학금을 받고 동화에나 나올법한 곳에서 공부할 기회를 얻었죠. 그동안 수많은 이민자들에게 자유와 기회의 등대로 여겨졌던 미국이었습니다.

While studying here, my father met my mother. She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression. The day after Pearl Harbor he signed up for duty, jointed Patton's army and marched across Europe.

이곳에서 공부하는 동안 아버지는 어머니를 만났습니다. 어머니는 지구반대편의 캔자스 주의 한 마을에서 태어났습니다. 어머니의 아버지는 대공황시절 대부분을 유전과 농장에서 일하셨어요. 진주만 공격이 일어난 다음날, 외할아버지는 자원입대해 패톤 장군의 부대에 배치받았고 유럽 전역을 행군했습니다.

Back home, my grandmother raised their baby and went to work on a bomber assembly line. After the war, they studied on the GI Bill, bought a house through FHA, and later moved west all the way to Hawaii in search of opportunity.

And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter, a common dream, born of two continents.
그분들 역시 자신들의 딸에 대해큰 꿈을 가졌과 이리해 두 개의 다른 대륙에서 하나의 공통된 꿈이 피었습니다.

My parents shared not only an improbable love; they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation.
제 부모님은 당시 불가능해 보이는 사랑만 나눈게 아니라 이 나라에선 모든 것이 이뤄질 수 있다는 믿음도 나눴습니다.

They would give me an African name, Barack, or 'blessed,' 'believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success.
미국같이 편견없는 나라에선 어떤 계통의 이름을 가지고 있더라도 성공하는 데 지장이 없다고 믿었기에 제 부모님께선 저에게 '축복받은자'를 뜻하는 버락이라는 아프리카 이름을 주셨습니다.

They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren't rich, because in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential.
미국같이 관대한 나라에선 부잣집 아들이 아니어도 자신의 잠재력을 마음껏 발휘할 수 있다고 믿었기에 제 부모님께선 제가 이 나라 최고의 엘리트 교육을 받는 것을 상상하실 수 있었습니다.

They are both passed away now. 두 분 모두 제 곁에 없습니다.

Yet, I know that, on this night, they look down on me with pride.
하지만 오늘 밤, 두 분 모두 자랑스럽게 저를 지켜보고 계시다는 걸 압니다.

They stand here. And I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents, dreams live on in my precious daughter.

I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible.

Tonight, we gather to affirm  the greatness of our nation, not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy.
오늘밤 우리는 미국의 위대함을 확인하러 이 자리에 모였습니다. 우리의 위대함은 초고층 빌딩이나 막강한 군대, 경제의 크기에서 비롯되는게 아닙니다.

Our pride  is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago,

This year, in this election, we are called to reaffirm our values and commitments, to hold them against a hard reality and see how we are measuring up, to the legacy of our forebearers, and the promise of future generations.
올해 열리는 대선에서 우리는 우리의 가치관과 신념을 재확인할 필요가 있습니다. 어려운 현실에 직면해서도 이를 지켜내며 선조들의 유산과 후손들을 위한 약속에 우리가 얼마나 충실하게 살고 있는지를 말입니다.

More to do for the workers I met in Galesburg, Illinois, who are losing their union jobs at the Maytag plant that's moving to Mexico, and now are having to compete with their own children for jobs that pay seven bucks an hour.
공장이 멕시코로 옮겨가기 때문에 일자리를 잃고 시간당 겨우 7달러를 주는 일자리를 놓고 자식뻘인 젊은이들과 경쟁해야 하는 일리노이주의 메이태그 가전 농장에서 일하던 노조 소속의 근로자들을 위해 해야할 일이 더 많습니다.

More to do for the father I met who was losing his job and chocking back tears, wondering how he would pay $4,500 a month for the drugs his son needs without
the health benefits he counted on.

The people I meet in small towns and big cities, in diners and office parks, they don't expect government to solve all their problems.
그동안 소도시, 대도시, 음식점과 사무실 밀집지역에서 제가 만난 사람들은 정부가 자신의 모든 문제를 해결해주길 기대하지 않습니다.

They know they have to work hard to get ahead and they want to.
나아가 자신이 원하는 걸 위해선 열심히 일해야 한다는 걸 누구보다 잘 알고 있습니다.

Go into the collar counties around Chicago, and people will tell you they don't want their tax money wasted by a welfare agency or the Pentagon.
시카고 주변의 잘 사는 동네에 가면 사람들은 자신이 낸 세금이 빈민담당부서나 국방부에 의해 낭비되는걸 원치 않는다고 말합니다.

Go into any inner city neighborhood, and folks will tell you that government alone can't each kids to learn.
도심 속 빈민가에 가면 사람들은 정부 혼자 힘으로는 아이들을 가르칠 수 없다고 합니다.

They know that parents have to parent, that children can't achieve unless we raise their expectations and turn off the television sets and eradicate the slander that says a black youth with a book is acting white.
부모는 부모노릇을 해야하고 아이들은 더 많은 것을 이루기 위해 기대치를 높여야 하고, TV를 끄고 책을 읽는 흑인아이는 백인흉내를 낼 뿐이라는 비아냥거림을 멈추어야 한다는 걸 압니다.

No, people don't expect government to solve all their problems.

But they sense, deep in their bones, that with just a change in priorities, we can make sure that every child in America has a decent shot at life, and that the doors of opportunity remain open to all.
하지만 정부가 우선순위를 바꾸기만 해도, 미국의 모든 아이들에게 괜찮은 삶을 살아볼 기회를 제공할 수 도 있고, 모두를 위해 기회의 문을 열어놓을 수 있다는 걸 뼛속깊이 압니다.

Our party has chosen a man to lead us who embodies the best this country has to offer. 우리당은 가장 높은 자질을 갖춘 한 사람을 대통령 후보로 지명했습니다.

So instead of offering tax breaks to companies shipping jobs overseas, he'll offer them to companies creating jobs here at home.

The FBI had investigated the killer for possible ties to terrorism. Omar Mateen was on the terror watch list until the FBI cleared him. It seems hard to justify, but people on that terror list are still allowed to buy weapons, and that has set off a debate that Dean Reynolds is covering.

He bought it and a Glock 17 pistol legally, even though he had been on and off the FBI watch list for suspected terrorists twice, the last time in 2014.

What's more, under current law, had he actually been on the watch list this month, no law would have automatically stopped him from making a purchase. That's because right now, the law bars felons, fugitives, illegal immigrants, or juveniles, for example, from buying guns, but not suspected terrorists.

FBI data show that people who were on the terror watch list last year were involved in background checks 244 times, and in 223 of those cases, the firearm purchases went ahead. That's a 91% approval rate. Now, in the aftermath of Orlando, the presumptive presidential nominees are suggesting the laws need to be toughened.

Before 1972 when the Marine Mammal Protection Act went into effect, sightings of even a single seal were rare. But today, we spotted hundreds on the uninhabited nature reserve where the aerial video was shot. Biologists say the resurgence of seals here is likely one of the reasons there has also been a rise in the number of sharks in these waters looking for food.

Security cameras capturing airport workers handing him the bomb in the departure lounge. And now there's even a public call asking for the toddler's parents to be held responsible in the animal's death. Blake McCoy has the latest. Tonight outrage over an incident at the Cincinnati Zoo when a 3-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure Saturday.

For ten agonizing minutes onlookers watched including the boy's mother who cried out to him. ("Mommy's right here.") At one point the 420-pound male silverback named Harambe grabbed the boy's ankle and dragged him through the water. ("Mommy loves you. I'm right here.") Zoo officials opened fire killing the gorilla and rescuing the boy.

큰 소리로 절규하는 아이의 엄마를 포함한 구경꾼들은 10여분동안 고통스럽게  지켜보았습니다. (엄마 여기 있단다!)  어느 순간 420파운드의 수컷 하람비라는 이름의 실버백 고릴라가 아이의 아이의 발목을 잡고 물 속으로 질질 끌고 갔습니다.

Today zookeepers defended their decision. "Naturally, we did not take the shooting of Harambe lightly. But that child's life was in danger." On social media, a firestorm. People upset the gorilla was killed. Many blame the boy's mother who runs a day care center. An online petition now has 200,000 signatures urging she be charged with negligence.

 동물원 관계자들은 자신들의 주장을 옹호했습니다. "우리는 하람비 사살을 가볍게 여기지 않았습니다. 하지만 아이의 목숨이 위태로웠습니다." 소셜 미디어에서는 비난이 빗발칩니다. 고릴라가 죽임을 당한 것에 사람들은 화가 났습니다. 많은 이들이 유아원을 운영하는 아이의 엄마를 비난합니다. 그녀의 태만에 책임을 져야한다는 온라인 청원에 20만명이 넘게 서명했습니다.

Zoo officials say a tranquilizer would have taken too long and agitated the gorilla more. They are reviewing how the child was able to get into the enclosure. This viral video shows a steel railing with wires below. That railing is followed by four feet of vegetation before a 15-foot drop into a moat where the child fell. Harambe heard splashing and jumped in also.

 동물원 관계자는 진정제는 너무 오래 걸렸을 것이고, 고릴라를 더 위험하게 할것이라고 말했습니다. 그들은 아이가 어떻게 우리에 들어갈 수 있었는지 조사하고 있습니다. 이 바이럴 비디오는 아래 철사가 있는  강철난간을 보여줍니다.  그 난간 뒤로 4피트의 초목이 이어지고, 아이가 떨어진 해자로 이어지는 15피트의  낭떠러지가 있습니다. 고릴라는 첨벙거리는 소리를 듣고 역시 뛰어들었습니다.

Tonight the zoo insists the gorilla enclosure is safe. They say in the 37-year history of the exhibit they've never had a breach. They plan to reopen it next weekend. As for the mother, police tell me she's not under investigation and will not face charges.
