Every man is his own best critic. Whatever the learned say about a book, however unanimous they are in their praise of it, unless it interests you it is no business of yours.
모든 사람이 각자 가장 뛰어난 비평가이다. 지식인들이 책에 대해 무엇이라 말하든, 만장일치로 그들이 그것을 칭찬하든, 당신이 그것에 흥미가 없다면, 그건 당신과 상관없는 일이다.

No matter where you go, no matter who your ancestors where, what school or college you have attended, or who helps , your best opportunity is in yourself.
당신이 어디를 가건, 조상이 누구이건, 어디에서 어느 학교를 나오고, 어느 대학을 다녔건, 누가 당신을 도왔건 그런건 상관없다. 최고의 기회는 당신 자신 안에 있으니까.

One has to be especially wary of the ideas which seem the most self-evident and the most obvious. We have heard them accepted as truism from our childhood. Yet it is exactly these ideas which must be first put upon the scales to be most carefully weighed. (53-4)
가장 자명해보이고 명확해보이는 생각들을 특별히 경계해야 한다. 우리가 어린 시절부터 들어온 것들을 사실이라고 받아들였다. 그러나 정확히 이런 생각들이 가장 먼저 저울에 올려져 가장 신중하게 재어보아야 할 것들이다.

If you would make the most of yourself, you must have courage. If you are afraid to speak before others, you must persist in doing so until you are no longer afraid. Doing a thing which you are afraid to do often helps you to overcome fear. (31-4)
당신이 자신을 최대한으로 활용하고 싶다면, 용기를 가져야만 한다. 당신이 다른 사람들 앞에서 말하는 것을 두려워한다면, 더이상 두렵지 않을때까지 끈질기게 계속 해야만 한다.  당신이 두려워하는 것을 하는 것이 자주 두려움을 극복할 수 있게 한다.

Asked to give a radio talk on safe driving, an American taxi-driver, who had driven a million miles without an accident, announced: "It's simple-just drive on the theory every other fellow in the world is crazy."
어느 라디오 토크쇼에서 백만 마일을 사고없이 운전해온 한 미국 택시 운전수가 안전운전에 관해 말해달라고 요청받았다. 그가 말하길, "그건 간단해요. 세상에서 나를 제외한 모든 운전자들이 미쳤다고 가정하고 운전하면 됩니다."

In my youth, when my instinctive feeling about a book differed from that of authoritative critics I did not hesitate to conclude that I was wrong. It was long before I realized that the only thing that mattered to me in a work of art was what I thought about it. (61-3)
어린 시절, 책에 대한 내 직감이 권위있는 비평가들과 다르면 주저없이 내가 틀렸다고 결론내렸다. 머지않아 나는 예술작품에서 내게  중요한 것은 단 하나는 내가 그것을 어떻게 생각하느냐라는 걸 깨달았다.

No matter what road is chosen the travelers who started from different valleys will all meet on the top of the mountain, provided they keep on ascending. No one must pride himself on having chosen the best route nor force his neighbor to follow him.  (77-3)
각각 다른 골짜기에서 시작한 여행자들이 어떤 길을 택했든 그들이 계속해서 오른다면 산 정상에서 모두 만날 것이다. 누구도 그가 선택한 길이 최고의 길이라고 뽐내거나 이웃에게 자신을 따르라고 강요해선 안된다.

It is in men as in soils, where sometimes there is a vein of gold which the owner does not know of.  (84)
인간은 흙과 같다. 때로 금광이 있는 걸 그 주인은 모른다.

Some people think that they cannot spare time for exercise. They cannot be told too soon that they must find time for exercise, or they will have to find time for illness.

어떤 이들은 운동에 할애할 시간이 없다고 말한다. 운동할 시간을 찾지않으면, 앓아누울 시간을 가질 거라고, 아무리 빨리 말해줘도 빠르지 않다.


The great use of a school education is not so much to teach you things as to teach you the art of learning; so that you may apply that art in after life for yourselves, on any matter to which you choose to turn  your mind. (97-1)
학교 교육의 큰 용도는 당신에게 여러 사물을 가르치기보다는 배움의 기술을 가르쳐주는 것이다. 그래서 훗날 당신이 마음을 쏟기로 선택한 어떤 것에든 스스로 그를 적용할 수 있게끔 말이다.

Affirmation and resolution without prompt endeavor for realization are worse than useless. It is the man of action, of continued and repeated action, the man who never acknowledges defeat who ultimately wins out. (99-3)
실현하기 위해 신속한 노력을 하지 않고, 확신하고 결단만 내리는 것은 백해무익하다. 행동하는 사람, 지속적으로 반복하여 행동하는 사람, 패배를 인정하지 않는 사람이 결국 해낸다.

Little things that are mean, bad, contemptible, we should not trouble ourselves with, but of little things that are beautiful there are thousands all about us, and not to see them, not to love them, is decidedly a great misfortune. (99-4)
우리는 하찮고, 나쁘고 경멸할만한 사소한 것들로 우리 자신을 괴롭혀선 안된다. 그러나 우리 주변에는 아름다고도 작은 것들이 수없이 많다. 그것들을 보지 않고, 사랑하지 않는 것이 결정적으로 커다란 불행이다.
